{"id":7991,"date":"2005-11-22T19:17:00","date_gmt":"2005-11-22T19:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pharma-mkting.com\/pfizer-tries-unbranded-ed-dtc-ads\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T01:28:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T01:28:09","slug":"pfizer-tries-unbranded-ed-dtc-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/pfizer-tries-unbranded-ed-dtc-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"Pfizer Tries Unbranded ED DTC Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite what its own executives are saying to the FDA&#8211;i.e., unbranded DTC ads are not as effective as branded ads to drive consumers to doctors&#8217; offices (see &#8220;<a style=\"font-family: arial;\" href=\"http:\/\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/2005\/11\/why-unbranded-ads-dont-work.html\">Why unbranded ads don&#8217;t work<\/a>&#8220;)&#8211;yet fulfilling its pledge to spend more of its media budget on disease-awareness ads, Pfizer is said to &#8220;break a TV ad this week talking about erectile dysfunction [ED]&#8221; WITHOUT mentioning the Viagra brand in the ad.<\/p>\n<p>According to Brandweek (see &#8220;<a style=\"font-family: arial;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brandweek.com\/bw\/news\/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001526203\">Pfizer Breaks New ED Advertising<\/a>&#8220;):<\/p>\n<blockquote  style=\"font-family:arial;\"><p>The new ad is unbranded and takes the form of an educational campaign encouraging men to call a Pfizer helpline to talk about their condition and to receive advice on how to approach their doctors about it. The theme is, &#8220;Make the call.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The approach is consistent with Pfizer&#8217;s vow earlier this year to make its advertising more informative and educational. However, the company&#8217;s Viagra brand, which is not mentioned in the advertising, clearly stands to gain\u00c2\u0097when patients go to their doctors with specific ad-driven requests, the leading brand in the category tends to benefit most.<\/p>\n<p>I have been calling for marketers of ED drugs (Pfizer, Lilly, GSK) to include more information about ED in their TV and print DTC ads (see, for example, &#8220;<a style=\"font-family: arial;\" href=\"http:\/\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/2005\/08\/pfizer-dtc-pledge-ed-is-litmus-test.html\">Pfizer DTC Pledge: ED is Litmus Test<\/a>&#8220;). This hasn&#8217;t escaped notice by the Wall Street Journal, which wrote about me recently:<\/p>\n<blockquote  style=\"font-family:arial;\"><p>&#8220;Among his pet peeves is erectile-dysfunction advertising, which he believes focuses too heavily on younger men and libido-enhancing promises while failing to educate consumers about the disease.&#8221; (See <a href=\"http:\/\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/2005\/11\/wsj-cites-pm-blog-as-must-read.html\">WSJ Cites PM Blog as &#8220;Must Read&#8221;<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure if the &#8220;pet peeve&#8221; comment is a put-down or not. Anyway, I am still on the case and look forward to seeing these ads. Until I do, I will reserve judgmentt on how &#8220;educational&#8221; they are.
