{"id":7281,"date":"2008-12-04T13:12:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-04T13:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pharma-mkting.com\/marketing-causes-death-link-between\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T01:24:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T01:24:06","slug":"marketing-causes-death-link-between","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/marketing-causes-death-link-between\/","title":{"rendered":"Marketing Causes Death: the Link Between Black Friday and Black Boxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_ZiPiXEv_Q_g\/STfdherBraI\/AAAAAAAACEc\/UtmgZ-lD_Lw\/s1600-h\/sadsmile.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/sadsmile.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275929055726775714\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>AdvertisingAge reports: &#8220;Security should have been better, but advertising also helped kill a temporary worker at Wal-Mart, according to a lawsuit filed by the estate and relatives of the 34-year-old man trampled by a pre-dawn Black Friday crowd at a Valley Stream, N.Y., store&#8221; (see &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article?article_id=132999\">Lawsuit: Marketing Blamed in Wal-Mart Trampling Death<\/a>&#8220;).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, across the pond, a BMJ commentary written by David P Kao, fellow, cardiovascular medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, concludes &#8220;New efficiencies in drug marketing exacerbate the problem [of reduced FDA focus on safety] because rapid adoption of new drugs can quickly expose large numbers of patients to unknown risks&#8221; (see &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/short\/337\/dec02_2\/a2591\">What can we learn from drug marketing efficiency?<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.postchronicle.com\/news\/health\/article_212190368.shtml\">Aggressive Drug Marketing May Endanger People<\/a>&#8220;).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a rare thing to see two independent, nearly simultaneous accusations that marketing can be dangerous to our health and well-being!<\/p>\n<p>Experts in both these cases cite the need for better safety oversight.<\/p>\n<p>In the Wal-Mart case, &#8220;Wal-Mart didn&#8217;t appear to have enough security to handle the crowds and that police had told retailers in the county two weeks earlier that security and crowd control were their responsibility,&#8221; reports AdvertisingAge.<\/p>\n<p>In the drug case, David Kao suggests that drug companies&#8217; marketing techniques could be used to improve safety surveillance systems, which is largely the responsibility of Physicians. The FDA oversees the process, but really does not have enough &#8220;boots on the ground&#8221; to effectively enforce day-to-day drug safety issues. Similarly, police forces do not have enough personnel to provide security at every Wal-Mart.<\/p>\n<p>With drug safety, it&#8217;s largely up to physicians and patients to voluntarily report problems to the FDA and although drug companies have promised to do post-marketing safety surveillance, the majority of those promises go unfulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect that Wal-Mart and other stores will also promise to implement better security, but that these promises will also go unfulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, well.
