{"id":6571,"date":"2011-09-01T14:54:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-01T14:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pharma-mkting.com\/brando-pharma-makes-offer-generic\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T01:20:41","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T01:20:41","slug":"brando-pharma-makes-offer-generic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/brando-pharma-makes-offer-generic\/","title":{"rendered":"Brand(o) Pharma Makes Offer Generic Companies Can&#8217;t Refuse!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-cnHeZSnju64\/Tl-baYDSceI\/AAAAAAAADeU\/_n7PHH5M4bk\/s1600\/BigPharmaGodfather.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/BigPharmaGodfather.jpg\" width=\"261\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>According to the&nbsp;&nbsp;Federal Trade Commission (FTC), some <b>brand<\/b> pharmaceutical companies are imitating Marlon<b> Brando<\/b>&#8216;s portrayal of the Godfather:&nbsp;They are making offers to potential competitors that they hope can&#8217;t be refused.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;As reported today in the <i>New York Times <\/i>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forums.pharma-mkting.com\/showthread.php?t=56357\">see here<\/a>) &#8220;some drug makers are using an indirect method to delay competition from low-cost generic products by promising not to introduce their own generic versions if a potential competitor delays its entry into the market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of saying, \u2018Here\u2019s $200 million, go away,\u2019 they\u2019re saying they could penalize them $200 million, but they won\u2019t, so go away,\u201d said Jon Leibowitz, chairman of the FTC.<\/p>\n<p>The FTC issued a final report (attached to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forums.pharma-mkting.com\/showthread.php?t=56357\">this post<\/a>) on authorized generic drugs that concludes when pharmaceutical companies introduce an authorized generic version of their brand-name drug, it can reduce both retail and wholesale drug prices. The report also found that authorized generics have a substantial effect on the revenues of competing generic firms. Over the longer term, by lowering expected profits for generic competitors, the introduction of an authorized generic could affect a generic drug company\u2019s decision to challenge patents on branded drug products with low sales.
