{"id":6397,"date":"2012-06-26T13:26:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T13:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pharma-mkting.com\/bogus-predictions-of-pharma-industry\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T01:19:21","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T01:19:21","slug":"bogus-predictions-of-pharma-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/bogus-predictions-of-pharma-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Bogus Predictions of Pharma Industry Online Ad Spending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a headline, versions of which I have been seeing for years: &#8220;Pharmaceutical Advertising Spending Shifts to Digital.&#8221; That&#8217;s how Business 2 Community &#8212; &#8220;an independent online community focused on sharing the latest news surrounding Social Media, Marketing, Branding, Public Relations &amp; much more&#8221; &#8212; describes the latest data from eMarketer, which predicts that &#8220;pharmaceutical&#8221; online marketing will increase by a staggering 23.3% in 2012 vs. 2011 (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business2community.com\/marketing\/pharmaceutical-advertising-spending-shifts-to-digital-0202011\">here<\/a> and chart below).<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-UwEtIaIWtLY\/T-mxv9MrSfI\/AAAAAAAAEVk\/TJHon-KwOYQ\/s1600\/eMktrHConlineSpend2011-2016.gif\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/eMktrHConlineSpend2011-2016.gif\" width=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\nFirst, eMarketer&#8217;s data are not specifically focused on the pharmaceutical industry. The data includes ALL healthcare industries, including doctors, hospitals and &#8220;other entities that deliver health services such as health maintenance organizations (HMOs)&#8221; and, I presume, health insurance companies. What percent of the $1.58 billion in online spending predicted for 2012 is pharma specific? Probably over 50%, but not 100%. Perhaps 75%? Your guess is as good as mine (or eMarketer&#8217;s).<\/p>\n<p>So the headline above is misleading. It should read &#8220;Healthcare Advertising Shifts to Digital.&#8221; But is it really?<\/p>\n<p>Another problem is that eMarketer&#8217;s predictions about online healthcare ad spending have been &#8220;all over the map&#8221; by which I mean wildly inaccurate and meaningless. In 2007, for example, eMarketer predicted that the spending on online HC marketing would be $2.20 billion in 2011 (see <a href=\"http:\/\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/2008\/03\/pharma-recession-part-deux-online-ad.html\">here<\/a> and chart below). But the eMarketer chart above now indicates the number is closer to $1.28 billion, which is quite a difference.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-O-I3n0vw8m4\/T-m2ENx6hpI\/AAAAAAAAEVw\/p1gaZZwfCZs\/s1600\/eMktr-Pharma-online-growth-chart.gif\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"224\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/eMktr-Pharma-online-growth-chart.gif\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\nSo, why should we believe eMarketer&#8217;s prediction that online HC ad spending will increase by 23.3% this year?
