{"id":6103,"date":"2013-11-21T18:06:00","date_gmt":"2013-11-21T18:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pharma-mkting.com\/the-slippery-slope-of-pharma-physician\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T01:17:02","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T01:17:02","slug":"the-slippery-slope-of-pharma-physician","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/the-slippery-slope-of-pharma-physician\/","title":{"rendered":"The Slippery Slope of Pharma Physician Phreebies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most physicians do not seem to know that &#8220;there is no such thing as a free lunch.&#8221; Medscape&#8217;s 2012 Ethics Report survey, for example, revealed that 72% of 23,710 physician respondents answered &#8220;Yes&#8221; to the question &#8220;Do you feel that you could be unbiased with prescribing habits if you accept lunches from pharmaceutical representatives?&#8221; (see <a href=\"http:\/\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/doctors-miss-their-free-lunches-says.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>But, according to other researchers, such thinking is a &#8220;slippery slope&#8221; on which &#8220;Physicians fail to recognize their vulnerability to commercial influences due to self-serving bias, rationalization, and cognitive dissonance&#8221; (see &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.pharma-mkting.com\/pmn1207-article01.htm\">Physicians Under Pharma&#8217;s Influence: Are Physicians Powerless Pawns of Pharma Psychology?<\/a>&#8220;).<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-kvnUxtfTSBI\/Uo5DI24_VbI\/AAAAAAAAGd0\/OcOTaprckXA\/s1600\/DocPayment-SlipperySlope.png\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"640\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DocPayment-SlipperySlope.png\" width=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\nWhile the general public is concerned about the cost of insurance under the Affordable Care Act, physicians are concerned about the Physician Payment Sunshine provision of the law, which requires pharma companies to report many kinds of payments to physicians, including the value of &#8220;free lunches.&#8221; That information will be made public in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Leana Wen, M.D., author of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whosmydoctor.com\/\">Who&#8217;s My Doctor? The Total Transparency Manifesto<\/a>,&#8221; summed up physicians&#8217; attitude regarding the sunshine provision this way: <br \/>\n<a name='more'><\/a>&#8220;Doctors need drug companies. We\u2019re not influenced by them. They just pay for lunches, and I need to eat. Bedsides, it\u2019s not my patients\u2019 business what I do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Dr. Wen, however, believes that patients should know where their doctors get their money, especially if they are getting paid by drug companies and medical device companies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dozens of studies have shown that even small gifts affect physicians\u2019 prescribing habits,&#8221; says Dr. Wen, &#8220;and that doctors suffer from the &#8216;you but not me&#8217; phenomenon &#8212; where we believe our own prescription habits aren\u2019t affected (which implies that pharma is somehow wasting their marketing efforts, a contention we know is not true)&#8221; (see &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/the-doctor-is-listening\/201311\/the-doctors-why-we-need-be-transparent-patients\">To the Doctors: Why We Need to Be Transparent With Patients<\/a>&#8220;).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wen is soliciting physicians to &#8220;endorse&#8221; her &#8220;Total Transparency Manifesto,&#8221; which states <i>in toto<\/i>:<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWe are physicians who believe in total transparency with our patients.<\/p>\n<p>When patients come to us, they are in a time of need. They are scared; they are vulnerable; they are in pain. Patients need to trust that doctors have their best interests at heart. They need to know who their doctor is. <\/p>\n<p>All of us Transparent Doctors hold ourselves to be publicly accountable to our patients. With the disclosure and our Total Transparency Manifesto, we are saying that we don\u2019t have anything to hide from you. We know patients are vulnerable; we will be vulnerable with you. This is a partnership. We are in this together.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for joining us on this journey to rebuild and transform our healthcare system to one that upholds professionalism, prioritizes patient values, respects human dignity.\n<\/p>\n<p>To date, 11 physicians have endorsed the manifesto (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whosmydoctor.com\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, how do my readers &#8212; pharma marketing professionals &#8212; feel about gifts to physicians and bias? <\/p>\n<p>My &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/D6N9WWD\">Gifts to Physicians Survey<\/a>&#8221; asked respondents: &#8220;In your opinion, to what degree may EACH of the following pharmaceutical industry gifts\/subsidies\/payments to physicians present a potential conflict of interest?
