{"id":6044,"date":"2014-04-15T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pharma-mkting.com\/total-prescriptions-written-per-capita\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T01:16:43","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T01:16:43","slug":"total-prescriptions-written-per-capita","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/total-prescriptions-written-per-capita\/","title":{"rendered":"Total Prescriptions Written &#038; Per Capita Spending in U.S. Rise in 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a new report issued today by the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, total spending on U.S. medicines increased 1.0 percent on a real per capita basis in 2013, while the use of healthcare services overall rose for the first time in three years.<\/p>\n<p>The study \u2013 Medicine Use and Shifting Costs of Healthcare: A Review of the Use of Medicines in the United States in 2013 \u2013 found that &#8220;total dollars spent on medications in the U.S. reached $329.2 billion last year, up 3.2 percent on a nominal basis and a rebound from the 1.0 percent decline in 2012. Primary drivers include the reduced impact of patent expiries, price increases, higher spending on innovative new medicines, and greater use by patients of the healthcare system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over one-third of this spending was concentrated in 5 therapeutic areas: Oncology, Antidiabetes, Mental Health, Respiratory, and Pain. Three specialty classes (MS, autoimmune, and oncology) contributed $6.9Bn, or 68% of<br \/>\ntotal <b>growth<\/b>. See the following chart:<\/p>\n<p><a name='more'><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/RxSpendbyCategory2013.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/RxSpendbyCategory2013.jpg\" height=\"272\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\nHere&#8217;s another chart showing the trends in the number of total prescriptions &#8211; including refills and renewals -written (TRx) and the spending growth over the years:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/US-RxGrowthSpendChartTrend-2013.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/US-RxGrowthSpendChartTrend-2013.jpg\" height=\"400\" width=\"361\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\nAccording to the report, Higher spending growth in 2004 was associated with &#8220;a period of substantial innovation in medicines, whereas 2006 was linked to the implementation of Medicare Part D drug coverage for seniors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One other interesting factoid from this report is the trend in percent share of prescriptions written for generics, which is shown in the following chart:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/GenericRxShareTrend.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/GenericRxShareTrend.jpg\" height=\"241\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\nBranded generics don&#8217;t seem to be able to compete with non branded versions despite the hype about drug brands being more trusted by consumers.
