Will Pharma Ads Follow?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comscore.com\/Insights\/Presentations-and-Whitepapers\/2014\/The-US-Mobile-App-Report\">2014 U.S. Mobile App Report<\/a> by Comscore, U.S. digital consumers now spend more time using mobile apps than they do &nbsp;on desktop computers (see chart below).<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DigitalTimeSpent-Chart.png\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/DigitalTimeSpent-Chart.png\" height=\"268\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Total U.S. digital media time spent has jumped 24 percent in the past year, driven by a surge in mobile app usage, which increased 52 percent,&#8221; noted the report.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While mobile usage has been growing fast, it has not come at the expense of desktop computer usage, which still managed to grow by 1 percent. Apps drive the vast majority of media consumption activity on mobile devices, accounting for approximately 7 out of every 8 minutes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, mobile apps have not been attracting the dollars its audience warrants, says Comscore. I know of one pharma company, however, that has cleverly and successfully promoted one of its drugs via a mobile app.<\/p>\n<p><a name='more'><\/a>That company is Astellas, which partnered with RunPee, a movie-viewing mobile app that tells users the best time to &#8220;run and pee&#8221; without missing the best scenes, to deliver highly effective ads for Myrbetriq, a treatment for over-active bladder.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign integrated in-cinema advertising that promoted the mobile app, the app itself &#8212; which appealed to an appropriate audience at an appropriate time &#8212; and an interstitial ad that drove viewers to a mobile-optimized product information Web site. Upgrade your browser to one that does<\/p>\n<p>Not all smartphone users, however, download apps every month, although an astonishing one-third download one or more apps per month as shown in the following chart from the report:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/AppsDownloaded-per-Month-Chart.png\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/AppsDownloaded-per-Month-Chart.png\" height=\"255\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Naysayers might focus on the two-thirds of smartphone users who do NOT download any apps. From that perspective, it&#8217;s clear that pharma marketers should probably not waste their time (and money) developing apps and then expect smartphone users to download them &#8212; not unless they have an approach similar to Astella&#8217;s, which incentivized a targeted and receptive audience to download the app and not unless the app meets an unmet need.
