{"id":5914,"date":"2015-03-23T20:23:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-23T20:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pharma-mkting.com\/dtc-ad-spend-is-back-stronger-than-ever\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T01:15:59","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T01:15:59","slug":"dtc-ad-spend-is-back-stronger-than-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/dtc-ad-spend-is-back-stronger-than-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"DTC Ad Spend is Back Stronger Than Ever, Baby!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/NewViagraDTC-Ad.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/NewViagraDTC-Ad.jpg\" height=\"209\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>OK, maybe that&#8217;s an exaggeration, but according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2015\/03\/23\/yes-drug-companies-are-bombarding-your-tv-with-more-ads-than-ever\/\">Wonkblog<\/a>, a blog published by the Washington Post, and based on data from Kantar Health, &#8220;drug companies are bombarding your TV with more ads than ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maybe you&#8217;ve noticed that prescription drug ads are everywhere these days \u2014 more so than usual,&#8221; quips the blog. &#8220;It was just a few years ago that TV advertisements of prescription drugs had dropped off by 20 percent, as drugmakers were also cutting back on other types of direct-to-consumer advertising&#8221; (read, for example, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/pharma-dtc-ad-spending-took-nosedive-in.html\">Pharma DTC Ad Spending Took a Nosedive in 2012!<\/a>&#8220;).<\/p>\n<p>According to Kantar Media data, the pharmaceutical industry spent $4.5 billion marketing prescription drugs directly to consumers in 2014, up from $3.5 billion in 2012. That&#8217;s up from the $2.5 billion drugmakers spent in 2000, or $3.39 billion in 2015 dollars when adjusted for inflation, according to Wonkblog. Most of that spending &#8212; about 65% &#8212; is on TV ads.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my chart showing DTC spending on &#8220;measured media,&#8221; which includes print ads and Internet display ads, from 1998 through 2014.<\/p>\n<p><a name='more'><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DTC-SpendTrend-thru-2014.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-175-84-28.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/pharma-mkting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DTC-SpendTrend-thru-2014.jpg\" height=\"333\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\nPfizer&#8217;s Viagra and and Eli Lilly&#8217;s Cialis are ranked among the top five drugs advertised to consumers in 2014, according to Kantar. &#8220;Pfizer&#8217;s advertising budget for its &#8216;little blue pill&#8217; has more than doubled in the past five years to $232 million,&#8221; notes the&nbsp;Wonkblog&nbsp;post, &#8220;and the company notably started marketing directly to women in a new ad campaign that drops the long-running innuendo associated with its groundbreaking product&#8221; (for more on that, read, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/pharma-mkting.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/oh-yeah-baby-show-me-more-viagra-tv-ads.html\">Oh Yeah, Baby! Show Me More!&#8230; Viagra TV Ads Like This.
