Vol. 15, Issue No. 1: January 2016 – EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
2015 Was a Golden Year for Pharma Epic Number of Drug Approvals, Orphan Drugs Galore, But Lite on FDA Enforcement Actions!
If you thought things couldn’t get much better for the pharmaceutical industry and pharma marketers after the banging year of 2014, then you’d be wrong! 2015 was even better as far as new drug approvals and lack of enforcement actions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) go.
In 2015, FDA approved 45 new drugs–the highest number since 1996.
But FDA’s Office of prescription Drug promotion (OPDP) sent out only 9 advertising enforcement letters (2 Warning Letters, 7 Untitled Letters), which beats 2014’s record low of 10 letters.

2016 New Year’s Resolutions for Pharma How to Be Less Like Martin Shkreli
On the one hand, 2015 was a very good year for the pharmaceutical industry and pharma marketers. On the other hand, the media and politicians have found a face for evil pharma and rising drug prices: Martin Shkreli!
2016 is an election year and therefore it’s important that pharma has appropriate New Year’s Resolutions to counteract the bad press it’s likely to receive.
These are my New Year’s Resolutions for the drug industry and especially pharmaceutical marketers.
Resolutions:
- Put More Actionable Distance Between You and Martin Shkreli
- Cut Down on the Use of Buzzwords

- Stop Inventing Phony “Real Medical Conditions” like Binge Eating Disorder (B.E.D.)
- Be More (a Lot More) Transparent
- Increase the Quality (Not Quantity) of mHealth Apps
- Invite Pharmaguy Into Your Tent

Digitally Savvy Women Pharma Pioneers Show Support: Bring Them Into the Forefront!
Over the years Pharmaguy has had the pleasure of meeting and working with many very smart, talented, and interesting people in the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaguy has been especially honored to meet and document the work of drug industry digital “pioneers” who have lead the way in the use of social media, digital, and/or mobile for marketing, research, patient support, or corporate communications purposes.
A segment that has not received enough attention from Pharmaguy and others is pharma women pioneers, digital or otherwise. Less than one-third of the PharmaVoice 100, for example, are women.
To rectify that, Pharmaguy put together a list of “Digitally Savvy Women Pharma Pioneers.” You can find out who they are and more about them in this article.
