Mobile Apps Track Sunshine Payments Will They Help Reduce Disputes?
Under the Physician Payments Sunshine Law, pharmaceutical companies are required — starting in August 2013 — to collect financial data regarding payments to physicians. These data must be submitted to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) by March 2014. In the fall of 2014, CMS will post the 2013 data on its OpenPayments website, which will be accessible to the public.
Given that some pharma companies may not be trustworthy, physicians may want to keep a record of all the payments — cash or cash equivalent, in-kind items or services, stock, dividend, etc. — they receive from pharma companies. It turns out that CMS has a free smartphone app for that! CMS also created a companion app for the drug industry.
